Olympic silver medallist Kenny Bednarek won the men’s 200m race at the 2024 Diamond League Prefontaine Classic on Saturday (25 May), with a winning pace of 19.89.
Bednarek led an all-American podium, with Courtney Lindsey in second with a time of 20.09 and Kyree King in third at 20.15.
This marks Bednarek’s second win in the series after claiming victory in Doha.
Bednarek claimed the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games, as well as at the 2022 World Athletics Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field.
Eugene marks back-to-back wins for Bednarek
This marks Bednarek’s second win in the series after his victory in Doha. In today's post-race interview, Bednarek said, “I was just happy about my performance. I came in here, continuing on from what I did last week and executing.” He added that he wasn’t too concerned about the time due to the colder temps today at Hayward Field, adding, “I got the win and that's all that matters.”
Bednarek's next stop is the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials set for 21 to 30 June. Bednarek offered, “There’s no reason for any other race. We know where we are right now. It’s a matter of staying healthy and consistent, and we should be good to go.”
Missing from this event was the 21-year-old American sprinting phenom Erriyon Knighton. The two-time World Outdoor medalist was set to begin his build-up for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 here in Eugene before scratching out ahead of the event.
